Carnarvon Distributed Energy Resources (DER) trial

About the trial

Horizon Power is undertaking a ground-breaking research trial in Carnarvon, Western Australia. The main purpose of the trial is to understand how cloud movements impact on solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, and how this impacts on the network.

Carnarvon was selected as the location for this cutting-edge trial as the community has a long history of embracing innovation, including the first privately owned solar farm in Australia. Carnarvon also has record uptake of solar energy across homes and businesses.

The trial is expected to run for approximately 3 years.

Horizon Power will install a 3D sky camera in Carnarvon in order to track cloud movements and weather patterns. Participants data will be time-stamped and matched with sky-camera data, so that Horizon Power can understand the impact of cloud events and weather patterns on solar PV electricity generation and the network.
