Government-owned utilities’ energise WA's future workforce

Horizon Power continues to provide opportunities in the regions with more than 40 apprenticeships, traineeships and work placements opportunities offered this year.

Last month, Horizon Power acting Chief Executive Officer Mike Houlahan said the training and upskilling is reflective of changes across the energy industry and Horizon Power’s commitment to its people.

Energy Minister Ben Wyatt has acknowledged that Horizon Power, along with Western Power and Synergy, have made valuable contributions to Western Australia's future workforce through training and job opportunities.

Horizon Power has recently employed an apprentice distribution worker in Esperance, organised four employees from Port Hedland and Karratha to begin a distribution cable jointing apprenticeship in September and had nine Pilbara Grid employees complete adult apprenticeships in the trade qualification Certificate III ESI Distribution Cable Jointing.

Next year another round of apprenticeship training will begin for the same Pilbara employees.

The company has also just begun training six Pilbara employees in the traineeship - Certificate IV Leadership & Management and in October the company is putting four Esperance employees and one Kununurra employee through a traineeship conducting a Certificate IV ESI – High Voltage Glove & Barrier training program.

Through a partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCI) and Engineers Australia, Horizon Power allowed 10 West Australian graduates to gain full-time employment. Synergy, Western Power and Alinta have since joined the partnership to further boost graduate opportunities. Our Bentley office will take on six vacation engineering students in December for 12 weeks.
