Smart energy solutions for Broome North

Residents in Broome North are set to be part of an innovative pilot program to reduce their power bills and give them greater control over their energy usage.

‘Smart Sun’ household energy packages are being offered to a limited number of existing Waranyjarri Estate residents and those planning to build a property in the estate.

The subsidised packages will include rooftop solar panels, a storage battery and inverter combined with ‘smart’ appliances including air-conditioning, pool filtration and hot water systems.

An energy management system and mobile app will enable customers to track their energy usage and reduce their energy consumption.

Horizon Power Managing Director Frank Tudor said the trial was part of Horizon Power’s commitment to renewable energy alternatives.

“Technology is evolving and so is customer demand for renewables,” Mr Tudor said.

“Families want greater control over their energy use to reduce their power bills and manage the household budget.

”We are actively adopting new solutions to provide customers with more choice and minimise environmental impacts.

“The key challenge is integrating these new technologies to ensure people continue to enjoy a safe, stable supply of energy.”

While properties will still be connected to the existing network, the package will enable households to use solar-generated electricity to satisfy the majority of their energy needs.

“We are aiming to install the packages on six new homes and six existing properties,” Mr Tudor said.

“Builders and new home owners will be offered incentives to include the technology package in their designs.

Established homeowners who choose to take part in the pilot will have their home retrofitted with the package by trained installers.

The Smart Sun pilot is a joint project between Horizon Power and Landcorp, and forms part of Horizon Power’s broader strategy to expand the capacity of its existing network to cope with higher levels of solar energy for residents in remote and regional WA.
