- Landmark energy transition report highlights bill savings for Esperance
December 01 2023
Esperance residents who embraced the energy transition earlier this year are already reaping the rewards of substantial savings on their electricity bills, according to Horizon Power's Esperance Energy Transition Program Knowledge Sharing Report, released today.
The groundbreaking report showcases real-life case studies, revealing initial bill savings ranging from 14% to an impressive 59% for customers who made the switch to electric alternatives. This success comes as a result of the State Government's commitment to providing cleaner, greener energy to West Australians, with Horizon Power investing $10.5 million to support around 400 Esperance customers in transitioning to a new energy source.
The investment was prompted by the closure of the private gas network in Esperance at the end of March 2023, leaving Horizon Power to lead the way in a nation-leading project. The report not only celebrates the immediate benefits experienced by Esperance residents but also serves as a valuable roadmap for other towns considering similar energy transitions across Australia.
Modelling conducted by an independent specialist indicates that residential customers who opted for 100% electric alternatives for cooking, heating, and hot water are projected to save an average of 38% annually on their household energy bills.
Esperance Electrification Key Outcomes:
304 residential transitions completed, with 75% opting for 100% electric appliances.
An impressive 94% customer satisfaction rating was achieved throughout the delivery of the transition.
76 Department of Communities households were part of the successful transition.
Beyond bill savings, the report highlights the importance of on-the-ground support to assist customers in their journey away from gas. It emphasizes the necessity of educating both customers and trades on new technologies, ensuring a smooth and informed transition.
Horizon Power's Esperance Energy Transition Program sets a significant milestone for the State, representing the first electrification program of its kind in Australia. Energy Minister Bill Johnston commented on the success, stating, "The findings from this groundbreaking project showcase the success of switching energy and the subsequent benefits, allowing customers to save money on their household energy bills while contributing to a decarbonised future."
