- Horizon Power awards contract to redevelop its depot in Kununurra to a local builder
- Revamped facility to be more accessible to customers and accommodate future growth
Horizon Power has awarded a major contract to a Kimberley builder to redevelop its Kununurra depot.
The project is designed to improve functionality and safety and enhance customer experience. It is also expected to futureproof the building for up to 20 years.
The depot is one of the first buildings visitors see when they drive into the remote East Kimberley town. Built in 1985, it is well overdue for a refurbishment and will be redesigned to provide a welcoming space for customers with better parking facilities.
Award-winning master builder, CWD Builders - Developers, has 40 years of experience delivering construction projects in the Kimberley and the Pilbara. It has a proven track record in regional sustainability and has worked closely with Kununurra’s business community to deliver large projects for 18 years.
The project, expected to cost a total of $4.5 million, is being delivered as part of Horizon Power’s $75 million Renew the Regions program, which supports the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan.
The Renew the Regions program is delivering 18 projects across regional Western Australia, aimed at improving access to renewable energy and providing customers with greater choice when it comes to managing their electricity costs.
General Manager Operations, Tiri Sanderson, said Horizon Power was committed to partnering with regional businesses that invest locally and promote regional economic activity.
“It’s very important that our lead contractors are aligned with Horizon Power’s commitment to seek local content and participation wherever possible,” Ms Sanderson said.
“Around 90 per cent of this project’s budget will be spent in Kununurra, delivering on our promise to generate regional work opportunities and stimulate local economies.”
The depot redevelopment will include landscape artwork on the corner of Victoria Highway and Messmate Way, co-designed by Miriwoong Traditional Owners and artists, in collaboration with Waringarri Aboriginal Arts. It will incorporate culturally significant concepts important to the people of Kununurra and provide a welcoming entrance to the town.
The redevelopment is scheduled to be complete by mid-2022.
