Carnarvon Distributed Energy Resources (DER) trial

We need you to help shape the future of renewable energy.

At Horizon Power, we need your help to increase the amount of renewable energy on our networks.

Horizon Power is undertaking a ground-breaking research trial in Carnarvon, Western Australia. The main purpose of the trial is to understand how cloud movements impact on solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, and how this impacts on the network.

Watch the short video below to learn more about how cloud movements impact our network.

Carnarvon has been selected as the location for this cutting-edge trial as the community has a long history of embracing innovation, including the first privately owned solar farm in Australia. Carnarvon also has record uptake of solar energy across homes and businesses.

The trial is expected to run for approximately 3 years.

Horizon Power is hoping to recruit approximately 90 customers to participate in this trial.

Horizon Power will also be installing a 3D sky camera in Carnarvon in order to track cloud movements and weather patterns. Your data will be time-stamped and matched with sky-camera data, so that Horizon Power can understand the impact of cloud events and weather patterns on solar PV electricity generation and the network.

Why me?

To understand how cloud movements impact on solar PV electricity generation and the network, Horizon Power wants to get a better idea of:

  • how much solar energy your solar PV system generates;
  • how much electricity you use; and
  • how much of your electricity requirement is met by your own solar PV system,
at any given time of the day.

Whilst your existing electricity meter measures how much electricity you use over a given period, it does not provide Horizon Power with visibility of how much of your electricity requirement is met by your own solar PV system at any given time of the day. Horizon Power would like to install a special device, known as a Solar Smart Monitor, at your premises to find out this information.

How will it work?

By participating in this trial, and helping to create a large and diverse data set, you will be making a significant contribution to the advancement of distributed energy resources, such as solar PV and home batteries. This will ultimately lead to a more sustainable future for everyone.

By participating in the trial:

  • you will be helping to shape the future of energy in Australia; and
  • you can keep the Solar Smart Monitor at the end of the 3 year trial.

Participation in the trial is free and we will pay for you to access the Solar Analytics dashboard.

Once the Solar Smart Monitor has been installed, you don’t need to do anything for the duration of the trial. All costs associated with installation of the Solar Smart Monitor will be covered by Horizon Power.
